still catching up

These 2 paintings were done as part of my half year assessment for Uni. They were meant to convey thoughts about objectification of the human body. The objectification  topic came about through research I was doing for a History essay about Japanese comfort women.   As part of my research I came across a book by Susan Griffin called Pornography and Silence which, while off the direct subject of comfort women related to cultural traditions which preempted these wartime atrocities.

Objective 1
Objective 2

Both these canvasses were acquired through fortuitous scrummaging through discarded paintings from previous years.  For one or another reasons people spend a great deal of time painting during session only to eventually leave these canvasses behind.  Sometimes they start out with grand ideas only to find the task is too great for the alotted time; sometimes their grand ideas become too large to transport (something I have done myself on occasion);  others merely find the whole painting thing just isn’t what they expected so choose to move on to other activities.  It is the actions of these people which allow me to paint on a larger format without too much expense.  So for those students I am truly grateful.  The first panel remains as I presented it for assessment while the second panel I have begun reworking, possibly to be resubmitted this session…or not, depending how it turns out.  Mind you I have only added a small amount of layering and already I am pleased with the result.

The work below was done on the same day using a variety of drawing paper which I found tucked away in a drawer while trying to adopt a suggestion of neatness and organization on my back verandah.  The verandah is where I’ve been storing most of my art materials while we deliberate over how to convert it into a studio without losing all of our outdoor area.  Icould include images but I might save that for a whole blog of its own.

The objective is to lay down a heap of colour, tear up the paper then use these to collage some works on paper with added elements of guoache and ink  perhaps.  Yet again I find several of these small pieces
to be interesting on their own which causes the dilemma…

do I tear or don’t I?

Well that worked well…didn’t it?

Not quite daily yet so as you can see I’m still working on my addiction.  You know the old saying..”it won’t happen overnight”…Well it won’t happen if I have too long a break between posts either so let’s see if things improve after today.  At the moment I’m a bit busy as I’m trying to work out what type of cable I need to connect my camera to the computer so I can set up a sort of live view capture of images I am doing for an attempt at stop motion animation.  At present I have a Canon 400D SLR and a copy of Dragon Stopmotion along with a makeshift selection of lights and the computer of course ( I’m using my son’s computer and his bedroom while he’s away in Canada).  I hope to finish with an animation using the drawing and erasing method on one piece of paper.  If it turns out I will prabably include it for assessment at Uni, if not I’ll just keep practising.  Now if i manage to keep my blog going you may even get updates.  My other assessments include a series of paintings and sundry preparation stuff; drawings using charcoal ( this is the class I will try to have the animation done for).  I’m also doing a subject on Curating so I need a presentation and some work experience plus a report and this blog.  Not too much!

first post

This is my blog and at some point in the very near future I will try to find something extremely witty and profound to begin this journal. As soon as I think of what to say I will let you know the outcome…so stay posted, it will be sooner than you expect…or…could be later.

second post

As I go along I’m sure I can think of more creative post titles but for now i an attempting to write in my blog at least once a day to make it a habit.  Not being inclined towards addiction I find habits difficult to form and need to apply them slowly until they stick…a bit like contact plastic on a dirty book (as in dusty dirt, not porn)….Does that make you smile?…I hope so, I’m saving the depressive stuff until we really get to know each other.

PS: ignore the dates on these first 2 posts as I slowly become familiar with what goes where.
